The Maxxis Grand Nationals takes place at the end of December, where few other events are able to operate. Scheduling alone primed this event to feature top-level 4-cycle competition, although the hype of the Maxxis Sprint Series following was key in bringing a big turnout as well. IONIC Edge chassis drivers were more than up to the challenge, though. Each looked to cap off their 2019 calendars on a high note.

Carter Pryor made the trek down from the Midwest to enjoy some fun in the Florida sun at the Maxxis Grand Nationals. He didn’t have the best run in qualifying by coming out of the session in 8th, but he went to work in his heat race to climb into the lead group to finish third.
In a rain-soaked Final, Carter rode in third for the majority of the race. Using some great racecraft, he moved up to second on the final circuit to snag the runner-up spot on the day. A fantastic podium run that put a cap on what has already been an extremely successful 2019 campaign.
Chris Cline had been putting his IONIC Edge chassis at the pointy end of the grid in nearly every start of his 2019 season. He started off his day with a third in qualifying due to a fouled spark plug. However, he played his cards right through the heat race to make a move for the lead late in the going. The move paid off, and Cline scored the heat race victory along with the pole position starting spot for the Final. Fellow IONIC Edge driver Matt Skaggs had an equally solid start to his weekend, as he picked up eleven spots to move up from a 16th place starting position to a 5th place results in the heat. Ryan Vaughn didn’t fare as good as his IONIC Edge teammates, but he finished the heat solid with room to improve for the Final.
Rain hit the racetrack shortly before the Final was slated to start. Unfortunately, Cline experienced a catastrophic clutch failure by the second corner of the Final. An anticlimactic ending to what was shaping up to be another solid performance for the southeast-based driver. Vaughn experienced similar luck. He had just begun clawing his way forward after starting deep in the field only to DNF on lap 10. As for Skaggs, he salvaged a solid finish of 7th in the rain, putting himself inside the Top 10 in both the dry and the wet.
